Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber 131 mile

Our journey from Munich took us to Dachau Concentration Camp, established by the Nazis in the 1930s to imprison political opponents of the Hitler regime.

As a young boy growing up in West Yorkshire, I once stumbled upon an old, torn book filled with haunting images I had never encountered before. One image, in particular, stuck with me, lingering in my mind throughout my childhood and into my teenage years.

When I finally visited Dachau in 2013, I was struck to find that same image on a wall in one of the rooms. The sight moved me deeply, evoking a profound sense of connection to the past. I often ponder what happened to that book, as I never saw it again, but the memories it stirred remain with me to this day.

Our ride continued through Bavaria and across country to Danauworth, where there was a road closure, a detour that took a different route completely, and taking the road south before heading north again. Arriving 1:30m later at the hotel.

Restaurant: HerR

Location: Herrngasse

This evening, we had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant HerR, a modern gem located on Herrngasse in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Under the helm of Chef Sascha Bungeroth, who brings years of culinary experience to the table, HerR offers a dining experience that is both sophisticated and innovative. The front of house team is equally impressive, guiding us through the evening with expert wine pairings and impeccable service.

We began with Pickled Canadian Scallops, then next we had Raw Marinated Taubertal Wagyu Beef. The luxurious texture of the Wagyu was complemented by a vibrant mix of horseradish and mustard delivering a punchy yet harmonious flavour.

The third course, Roasted Breton Gurnard, was excellent. This lesser known fish was served alongside risotto nero, salted lemon, and ocropus. For the main course, we enjoyed Glazed Venison from the Tauber Valley. Tender and cooked to perfection, the venison was accompanied by a seasonal medley of celery, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms, each ingredient enhancing the natural flavours of the dish.

If you find yourself in Rothenburg, a visit to Restaurant HerR is an absolute must. Whether you're a seasoned foodie or simply seeking an unforgettable dining experience, Chef Sascha Bungeroth and his team will not disappoint.
