Cortina d'Ampezzo to Salzburg 170 mile
Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you don’t always plan. After heavy rains forced us to reroute our trip through the Grossglockner, we found ourselves charting a new course that turned out to be just as rewarding.
Our original route through the majestic Grossglockner was unexpectedly closed due to recent heavy rain, but that didn't dampen our spirits. With a couple of alternative paths to choose from, we decided on the SS51/SS49 to Lienz.
Once in Lienz, we each took different paths to Salzburg. I opted for a scenic road that led through Matrei, eventually connecting to the 168 and 311, winding through beautiful landscapes. The road from Matrei to Bad Reichenhall was an excellent choice. It had long stretches of open roads with stunning vistas at every turn. From serene alpine views to charming villages, the route was an absolute joy for anyone who loves a scenic ride. Arriving in Salzburg, we checked into the Johannes Schlossl Gasthaus, a quaint and welcoming place to unwind after a long ride.
Though our original plans were derailed, the journey through SS51/SS49 and the 168/311 offered beautiful, unexpected moments. Sometimes, detours lead to the best experiences.
Restaurant: Esszimmer (1 Michelin Star)
Location: Hauptstrasse
Dinner at the Michelin-starred Esszimmer was a delightful experience. Located on the edge of town, the restaurant offers a formal yet welcoming ambiance with its open space, soothing colours, and vibrant contemporary artwork. The décor strikes a perfect balance between modern elegance and comfort, creating an inviting environment for a relaxed fine dining experience.
The service was polished and attentive, managing to be both professional and unobtrusive. From the moment we were seated, the staff ensured that our dining experience was seamless without being overbearing.
We had the pleasure of selecting dishes from both the tasting and à la carte menus. My meal began with Pork Belly in a strudel leaf, paired with tomato and octopus; a creative and satisfying starter. The main course of Turbot with Potato, Pumpkin, and Scadoil was beautifully prepared, complemented by sweet pepper-grapes. I finished with a delectable Oxtail Crêpe served with a cauliflower-onion accompaniment. Each dish was meticulously presented, showcasing the chef's skill in balancing flavours and textures.
The wine pairings, all local selections, were a revelation. They were unique and rare, providing an excellent value and offering a different experience compared to the more familiar international varieties.
Overall, Esszimmer delivered an outstanding dining experience with its elegant atmosphere, refined service, and inventive cuisine. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality, creative dishes in a relaxed yet upscale setting.
